Run the game from within your home directory, where doesn't matter,
just ensure the game is run from the same device as ~/.eternity/

The configuation directory will be created by the startup script on the
first run.

A valid Doom, Doom II, Final Doom, etc IWAD is required for use of this
engine. games/doomdata will install at the very least the shareware data
file for you.
